Student resources
Student resources: GPU access and tools for coursework
Some projects in MIS 769, MIS 752, and DA 790 outgrow a laptop. Students working with me can request time on lab GPU hardware for course and capstone work. This page explains what is available, who qualifies, and how to ask.
What is available
Compute for coursework
Lab GPU hardware is available for training and fine-tuning models, running large language models locally, and processing datasets that are too large for a personal machine. Access is granted per project for the duration of the semester.
Model training and fine-tuning for course projects
Local large language model inference and evaluation
Large-dataset processing for capstone and research work
Eligibility
Who can request access
Access is for students currently enrolled in one of my courses, or completing a DA 790 capstone or independent study under my direction, whose project has a concrete need for GPU compute. Coursework in IS 335 does not require it.
How to request
Send one email
- 01Describe the project
Two or three sentences: what you are building, what data you are using, and why it needs a GPU.
- 02Include the essentials
Your course code, UNLV email address, GitHub username, and a rough estimate of how many hours of compute you expect to need.
- 03Email the request
Send it to ryoung@unlv.edu with the subject line GPU access request: your course code.
- 04Get set up
Approved requests receive connection instructions and a short setup call or recorded walkthrough.
Expectations
Acceptable use
The hardware is shared. Use it for the project you requested it for, keep your credentials private, do not store protected or identifiable data on it, and release jobs you are not actively using. Access ends when the semester does unless we agree otherwise.
Synthetic or properly de-identified data only
Credentials are personal and not shared
Access is per project, per semester
Tools and tutorials
Learn the workflow
Setup walkthroughs, demos, and lectures are on my YouTube channel. Code, model releases, and datasets used in class are on GitHub.
Questions
Not sure if your project qualifies?
Ask. Fall 2026 office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in BEH 328, and Friday meetings are available by appointment on Zoom.
